Nawabganj upazila unit of Bangladesh Krishak Samity staged demonstration on Thursday demanding the purchase of rice on the union level.
Leaders of the organisation formed a human chain and roadside rally near the Central Shaheed Minar in the afternoon.
Speakers of the programme demanded the purchase of rice per maund at 1,020 taka. They said that farmers are suffering tremendous losses as the current market price of rice is 5 to 6 taka. If this continuous, the farmers will be left with no choice but to destroy the rice from their own fields. This will undoubtedly discourage farmers from cultivating rice in the upcoming season.
Central Assistant General Secretary of Bangladesh Krishak Samity Abid Hossain, district committee President Abdul Mannan, Abdus Salam, Sikkim Ali Member, Shakim Ali and other local leaders were present at the event.
