Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Tuesday invited agitating rickshaw pullers to Nagar Bhaban for tea. The mayor passed the invitation at a training workshop held at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital. Khokon said, “I invite them to Nagar Bhaban. We will hear their demands and will solve the problem through discussion”.

“We do not think that the city dwellers are facing much sufferings on three roads on which rickshaws are banned. This is because there are adequate vehicles for them on those roads. We will also free the footpaths for the smooth movement of the city dwellers,” he added. Among others, Prime Minister’s SDG Affairs Chief Coordinator Abul Kalam Azad and World Bank Regional Director John Roome, were also present.

Rickshaw pullers were staging demonstration on Tuesday for the second day, protesting the rickshaw ban on the city’s three key roads. Earlier, the authority banned rickshaws on three key roads in Dhaka--Gabtali to Azimpur via Asad Gate, Science Lab Crossing to Shahbagh via Bata intersection and Kuril to Syedabad Bus Terminal through Badda, Rampura and Khilgaon. Students and officegoers were the worst sufferers, as they got stuck in the gridlock.
