The heavy and major equipment for installing the first unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant have been arrived in Mongla Port, said a press release of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The press release mentioned the key equipment including Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel and a Steam Generator to be installed for the first unit of the NPP have arrived at the outer anchorage of Mongla Port at 11-00 am on October 19 after traversing some 14,000 kilometres of the waterway from Volga of Russian Federation.
This equipment will be loaded on a special barge from the Russian ship and will be transported from Mongla port to Rooppur NPP site on November-5 next.
The equipment will be carried through waterways at the newly constructed Rooppur Riverport via Chandpur and expected to reach at Rooppur on November-21.
The arrival of heavy and key equipment like Nuclear reactor pressure vessel and steam generator in the country is a major progress of the NPP project. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the Rooppur Nuclear Power plant in Iswardi in 2013. She also inaugurated the main concrete structure of setting up of the furnace for the first unit of the NPP on November-30,2018.
The first unit of Rooppur NPP with 1200-megawatt capacity is expected to start functioning from 2022 and the second unit with the same capacity is expected to start in 2023.
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission strikes a deal with Atmostroy Export of Russia on December-25, 2015 to install 2400 megawatt capacity NPP at a cost of US $ 1,265 crore (estimated 100,000 crore Bangladeshi Taka) on 1062 acres of land at Rooppur of Pabna district. Construction of various primary structures of the NPP has already been finished. 90 percent of the construction cost of the Power Plant has been granted as loan assistance to Bangladesh by Russia.
The latest Russian (three Plus Generation) developed VVR technology nuclear furnace will be used for the NPP of Rooppur.
