A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for Sheikh Jamal, a central leader of the Swechchhasebak League and former Organizing Secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity, following his arrest in the case filed over the killing of Jubo Dal leader Shamim during the BNP’s grand rally.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman approved the remand after a hearing on Wednesday. Earlier, on October 24, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Tanmoy Kumar Biswas of Paltan Model Police Station, had presented him in court, seeking a seven-day remand. However, Metropolitan Magistrate Saifur Rahman ordered him to jail and set October 30 for the remand hearing.
Sheikh Jamal was arrested by a Detective Branch team on October 23 from Dhaka's Moghbazar area.
According to the case statement, on October 28, 2023, the BNP held a grand rally as part of its central programme.
The ruling Awami League organized a counter-rally on the same day, with violence allegedly erupting at the BNP rally, reportedly with police assistance, targeting BNP leaders and activists. Many were injured, and Jubo Dal leader Shamim lost his life. Subsequently, a case was filed on September 24 at the Paltan Police Station in connection with the incident.
