An international seminar on ” Plant Health” was held at Senate Building of Rajshahi University (RU) on Sunday with a call of protecting the plant health for ecological balance.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association (BJSPS) jointly hosted the daylong seminar to mark the International Year of Plant Health 2020.

RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdus Sobhan addressed the opening ceremony as chief guest while VC of Sher-E-Bangla Agricultural University Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed and VC of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Agricultural University Professor Giash Uddin Mian spoke as special guests with VC of Bangladesh Agricultural University and President of BJSPS Professor Lutful Hassan in the chair.

RU Pro-VCs Professor Ananda Kumar Shaha and Chowdhury Jakaria and Second Secretary of Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh May Tomory also spoke.

In his remarks, Professor Abdus Sobhan said there is no alternative to creating more forestation for addressing the adverse impacts of climate change caused by global warming.

“Plantation of huge fruit trees can be an effective means of meeting nutritional demands in addition to food security and ecological balance”, he added.

Taking part in the technical sessions, most of the academics and scientists discussed and devised ways and means on how to reduce carbon emission at a substantial level to protect ecological balance in the dry region.

The participants laid emphasis on massive tree plantation to curb carbon emissions.
