Indian onion export thru Sonamasjid suspended

Indian Goverent has stopped exporting onions through Chapainawabganj Sonamasjid, country's second largest land port. Therefore, no onion truck has entered the Sonamasjid land port from India since Tuesday morning. 

Meanwhile, the price of onion has gone up by Tk 4 to 5 per kg in the local onion market of Chapainawabganj due to the suspension on onion export. Onions were sold at Tk 38-40 per kg in the local market on Monday which were sold at Tk 44-45 per kg from Tuesday morning. 

The former general secretary of the Sonamasjid Land Port C&F Agents Association said, 44 Indian onion vehicles entered the port on Monday but none entered the port on Tuesday.

There is a possibility of increase in the price of onion in the local market due to the ban on onion export by Indian Goverent. Onion traders said, 70-75 vehicles carrying onions are stuck at Mohdipur port in India.

Meanwhile, two a wholesaler and retailer were fined Tk 6,000 for not displaying the price list of onions in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawaganj by the Consumer Rights Protection Department on Tuesday afternoon. 

Zahirul Islam, Assistant Sirector of the Consumer Rights Protection Department in Chapainawabganj said a team from the department raided Shibganj market as part of market monitoring.

Jewel Enterprise, a wholesaler of onions was fined Tk 5,000 and Shamim Store, a retailer was fined Tk 1,000 for not displaying the price list of onions as per the rules.
