ICU with oxygen plant set up in BITID

Published : 19 Apr 2021 10:05 PM

A five-bed intensive care unit (ICU) with oxygen plant is finally being set up at the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID) Hospital in Fauzdarhat. Another Bioseptic lab is being set up.

From the very beginning of the infection, this hospital did not have any oxygen facility to treat the patients suffering from corona. As a result, the hospital could not gain the confidence of the patients even though it had the facility to admit the patients. If the patient's condition deteriorated, he had to be sent to other hospitals including Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

It is learned that the room on the ground floor of the hospital has been remodeled and a five-bed ICU has been set up. The hospital currently has 5 HDU beds, which mainly provide oxygen to patients with high-flow nasal canola. The cost of setting up ICU, oxygen plant and biosafety lab has been estimated at Tk 2 crore 20 lakh. The project is being implemented by the Public Works Department under the project 'Covid-19 Emergency Response and Pandemic Preparedness'.

Associate Professor of BITID, Dr Mamunur Rashid said the critically ill patients had to be shifted to other hospitals as there was no ICU facility. If the ICU facility is introduced, this problem will not be read. Moreover, if there is an oxygen plant, there will be no problem with the supply of oxygen. Patients will receive oxygen services without interruption. Overall, significant changes will be visible in the medical services at this hospital.

Assistant Director of BITID, Dr. Bakhtiyar Alam said, “I have received a letter from the Ministry approving the setting up of ICU, Oxygen Plant and Lab. A four-member team led by the executive engineer of the Public Works Department visited the hospital last Saturday. Work to set up the ICU has started since last Sunday. Hopefully this work can be completed in a very short time.

The first Corona Lab was launched in Chittagong on March 25, 2020 with the first corona treatment.
