We are deeply shocked and saddened at the casualties in a massive explosion at a building in the capital Dhaka’s Gulistan area.At least 19 people, including two women, were killed and over 100 others injured in a massive explosion at a seven-storey building near a BRTC bus counter in the city’s Gulistan area on Tuesday.

The explosion took place around 4.45pm at the building, mostly housing sanitary hardware stores alongside some private offices, jolting the entire area. The blast occurred on the ground floor and it damaged some other floors upstairs but it caused no fire, though residents in the neighbourhoodsaid huge dust-smoke engulfed the area.

The injured people are being treated at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute while many of them are in very critical condition. The huge blast occurred within two days of another blast in a building in Science lab area in the capital that killed three people and injured more than 50 on Sunday.Besides, at least six people were killed and 50 others injured as a fire broke out on Saturday at a private oxygen plant following an explosion in Kadam Rasul (Keshabpur) area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram on Saturday. There was an explosion in Sitakunda (of Chattogram) on Saturday while two others in capital Dhaka within a span of five days.

undergoing treatment at different hospitals

As such incidents of explosion continued happening, the government and its agencies concerned will have to monitor and ensure fire safety at residential and commercial buildings and factories.

The authorities concerned must take prompt and necessary measures to ensure better treatment of the injured people now undergoing treatment at different hospitals. On the other hand, the government will have to take immediate measures to unearth the main reasons behind the repeated explosions in different places of the country that are claiming many lives.
