About 90 percent of the residents of the capital reside by renting their homes. Most people rent houses not only in Dhaka but also in other divisions and district cities. In fact, people from the municipalities come to the city to find a way to live better lives by coming to the city and renting homes.

In various media reports we have seen that more than half of a family’s income goes to renting a home. Facing the current crisis created by the coronavirus the demand for home rent waiver is becoming strong. Facing a situation that many people lack the work to pay for home rents, the scenario has become quite disconcerting.

We too strongly agree with this demand. Since a large portion of the city dwellers’ income is spent on renting, many worry about paying the rent more than food. But as we have seen, the income of many of the lower classes has been stopped due to coronavirus infection. Even the lower middle class has come in danger due to the suspension of most jobs, including business, transport and education.

Many are being forced to live their lives by breaking the treasures they hold for a rainy day. We know that when the poor and the downtrodden are in danger, others come to their aid. But even after having problems, the lower middle and middle classes cannot help ask for help to others. Owners can come forward during such a calamity. It will not only benefit the middle or lower middle class of the city, but also be helpful for them.

Considering this, the demand for wavering the rent for at least two months has been strong. As we have already seen, some landlords in Dhaka have waived last month's rent. We thank them. We think homeowners who are dependent can opt for wavering half rent to help the needy at this time of crisis, the government can also take initiatives on home rent waiver too.
