Historic Mujibnagar Day was observed in Rajshahi on Monday with a befitting manner highlighting the significance of the day.

Bangladesh Awami League, district administration and various educational institutions including Rajshahi University (RU) arranged various programmes including rallies and discussion meetings to mark the historic day.

On April 17 in 1971, Bangladesh government-in-exile took oath at Baidyanathtala mango grove in Meherpur, in the then Kushtia district. Marking the day, a post-rally discussion meeting was held at the Senate Bhaban of Rajshahi University (RU) largely attended by teachers, students, researchers, freedom fighters and cultural personalities. Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Prof-VCs Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and Prof Humayun Kabir spoke as special guests.

Treasurer Prof Obayedur Rahman Pramanik, Registrar Prof Abdus Salam and Proctor Prof Asabul Haque also spoke. The speakers in the discussion meeting paid glowing tributes to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders who contributed immensely to the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The discussants recalled the events of the day when the exiled leaders took the most momentous decision of forming a legal government to draw global

attention to the ongoing War of Liberation. The formation of the government with Syed Nazrul Islam as acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu along with Tajuddin Ahmed as Prime Minister at

Baidyanath Tala, later renamed Mujibnagar, was a great leap forward towards achieving independence, they mentioned. Local units of Bangladesh Awami League and its associate organisations also observed the day in a befitting manner.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) also observed the historic day paying rich tribute to Bangabandhu and four other national leaders. RCC authority garlanded the portrait of Bangabandhu at city bhaban premises besides placing wreaths on the grave of Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman, one of the cabinet ministers of the Mujibnagar Government, at the Kadirganj family graveyard.
