Jute prices being fixed by the government has been a source of much joy for the farmers. Previously in the middle of August the price per maund of jute was fixed at Tk 2300. The farmers expressed much joy at that time. Now with harvest nearing completion it seems that the smiles on the farmers’ faces have gotten brighter.

A report published in this daily showed that the lucrative price of jute after completing its harvest and production of 94,086 tonnes in all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region this season has brought happiness to jute growers. The report also expressed that DAE officials said farmers completed harvesting jute last week and got an excellent yield rate of 2.09 tonnes per hectare on an average this season.

Such huge production is indeed a cause of great relief as the country’s jute sector is facing a crisis at the moment. But hopefully, it will come out of this crisis once the country’s jute sector goes through necessary modifications.

It is hopeful for the country that the enthusiastic farmers have finally brought 51,791 hectares of land under jute cultivation exceeding the fixed farming target by 199 hectares of land or 0.39 percent this season in the region. The extent of jute fields for cultivation will need to be increased in future to accommodate the growth of the sector.

Moreover, since the price was fixed, it has increased the morale of the farmers. It would be prudent if in the future the government also fix the price and prevent the gears of syndicates to spin in this golden sector.

Above all, privatisation of jute sector is needed so that the mills can be facilitated with better and more modern machineries along with better management. This will ultimately result in the betterment of the sector.
