Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Wednesday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has never shied away from embracing the international obligations that correspond to the legitimate demands and aspirations of country’s people, reports BSS. “Since her first term in office, Bangladesh has made efforts to present itself as a responsible and contributing member of the international community through its manifest commitment to peace and security, development and human rights,” he said.

The law minister said these at his closing statement at the United Nations Convention against Torture (UNCAT) at Geneva, Switzerland, today, a press release said here this afternoon. “In Bangladesh, you can count on having a credible, willing and engaged partner, working at enhanced compliance with its Human Rights Treaty obligations. We reiterate this solemn pledge as homage to the memory of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as we prepare to celebrate his birth centenary next year,” he added.

Anisul said Bangladesh tends to draw more international scrutiny for its humanitarian gesture towards 1.2 million forcibly displaced Rohingya from Myanmar than that appears to be reserved for states that are increasingly shutting off their borders to outsiders.

“On sensitive topics like torture and impunity, it is perhaps no surprise that even proven or convicted criminals and their cohorts would try to stake claims of innocence and victimization at the expense of our state institutions and many able professionals,” he further said.
