Ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators

We express deep concern over the harassment of a female student at Chittagong University. A female student was physically assaulted, harassed and humiliated in many ways by five youths while going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend at 10pm on July 17.

The gangsters including two students of CU forcefully tore off the clothes of the female student and captured the incident on video, issuing a threat her to make it viral. However, elite force Rapid Action Battalion arrested the five youths.

The authorities of CU resumed its academic activities after 18-month of Covid-19 shutdown in October last year and since then at least four such barbaric incidents took place on the campus. Such incidents cannot be tolerated at all.

The latest incident of harassment sparked protests on the campus as students have been staging demonstration and forming human chains every day. They are demanding justice for the female student who was allegedly harassed.

A number of female students have experienced unwanted harassment at various universities in the last few years. Now the question is why the authorities of universities fail to ensure the security of the female students on the campus.

Students who are involved in such

crimes must be dealt with iron hand

and brought to book immediately

If we see the national dailies’ headlines at a glance, we could be excused for thinking that some students instead of acquiring knowledge properly to serve the society and the nation as well, are getting involved in various crimes on campuses of different prestigious universities in the country.

Apart from academic and cultural activities, moral education is urgently needed to combat such crimes on university campuses and promote peaceful and inclusive societies. Therefore, the authorities of all public universities have to take measures to ensure female students security round the clock. The universities will also have to give special attention on taking immediate action once harassment on female students in any form takes place.

Today’s young people now studying at different higher educational institutions of the country are the future of the nation. We have to build our future generation as good human beings by creating scopes to utilise their talent, knowledge and intellect.

There is no alternative to take steps to protect the female students at any cost and to make university campus a beautiful place where both male and female students will study together. Otherwise, authorities of universities’ all efforts to build campuses into learning centres and creative and independent thought will go in vain. Therefore, the students, who are involved in such crimes, must be dealt with iron hand and brought to book immediately.
