The government has formally launched a ‘Tourism Masterplan’ for next 20 years in order to turn the travel and leisure sector into the 3rd largest source of revenue for the country.

The master plan will be completed by June 2021, and will create a distinctive brand image of Bangladesh as a popular tourist destination in the world. The plan ties in with the country’s target to become a developed nation by 2041.

The government has formulated the plan in such a way so that the development of the tourism sector contributes to the economic transformation of Bangladesh and help the country achieve Sustainable Development goals (SDGs).

We welcome this initiative of the government to revive the tourism sector and improve the image of our country abroad. It is high time that Bangladesh is presented to the rest of the world by highlighting our heritage and culture in order to facilitate tourism.

The government will be promoting and marketing the country’s tourism in three separate phases. The project will emphasize the identification and development of tourism products and their diversification with an assessment of infrastructure, marketing and investment opportunities.

Currently, the tourism sector is contributing 2 percent to the county’s total GDP. Through this masterplan, the government has a goal to increase the tourism GDP contribution up to 10 percent.

Intense monitoring is needed to bring the plan to fruition and the government must ensure that each and every aspect of the project is being carried out efficiently.

The current situation of tourism in our country needs to be improved. The country has a huge potential in terms of natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage. We need to utilize the resources we have at our disposal in order to boost our tourism sector.
