The Global Law Thinkers Society organised a tree plantation campaign ‘Gen4Trees’ (Generation for Trees) at the Bangladesh National Zoo in Dhaka on Monday on the occasion of the World Environment Day-2023. The campaign has been launched aiming to combat climate change impacts.

Sharif Jamil, General Secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA); Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Talukder, Director of Bangladesh National Zoo; and Raoman Smita, Founder of Global Law Thinkers Society attended the program.

The event started with plantation of trees at the National Zoo and freeing of plastic waste in the zoo area.

The guests present in the program spoke about the effect of climate change on the public life and highlighted the issue of awareness.

Sharif Jamil said, “If we are not aware now, then we will be the only ones responsible for the situation that we will be subjected to in the near future. We need to change ourselves and protect environment.”

Md. Rafiqul Islam said that there is no alternative to trees to save future generations. “We are making every effort to reduce all forms of pollution, including plastic, in and around the zoo. Hope today’s event of GLTS will make people aware,” he added.

Raoman Smita said, “With this campaign we will fulfill the target of planting 10 million trees by 2030. I believe this plantation will play a small role in the fight against the problem of climate change.”

GLTS executive member Shams Khan said, "There is a lot to know about our environment, which we want to learn together and teach the youth around us."

Mahir Dayan, co-founder of Green United Nations, said, 'To keep our environment green and to reduce the amount of pollution, we need to make everyone aware, that's why we need to plant more trees. We want to start that through this event. In the program, environment activists and volunteers from Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Plastic Rangers, Green United Nations and Rotaract Club participated.

The event concluded by highlighting the negative aspects of plastic to the local people and finally handing over the plants to the zoo authorities.
