Galachipa launch dock to turn into a river port: Khalid

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP said there are a pontoon and a jetty at the Galachipa launch dock in Patuakhali. A terminal will be constructed there to make it suitable for constructing a river port. 

The state minister said this while inspecting Galachipa, Panpatri, Badnatali, Auliapur and Hazirhat (Dashmina) launch ghats in Patuakhali district on Friday.

The State Minister said that enough work has been done to develop river ports and launch docks in the southern region of the country. Pontoon gangways have been set up at various launch docks. 

He again said, “River erosion is the main problem in the region. The sea is rough during the monsoon season. People have many problems in crossing the river. People cross the river at risk. The government is considering providing C-trucks in high-risk areas. As a result of river erosion, pontoons and gangways have been shifted to many launch docks. They will be repaired”.

Meanwhile, among others, Member of Parliament SM Shahzada, BIWTA Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq, Problem (Planning and Management) Md. Delwar Hossain, Chief Engineer (Dredging) said. Abdul Matin and Chief Engineer (Pur) Maidul Islam were present.

Note that the Galachipa launch dock was opened in 1975. The jetty is located on the banks of the river Ramnabad in the municipality. There is a pontoon and a jetty at the wharf for passengers to board the launch. Every day, a double-decker and two single-decker launches ply the route from Galachipa to Rangabali. The distance of Dhaka-Galachipa waterway is 274 km.

The Panpatti launch dock was opened in 1987. The jetty is located on the banks of Buragauranga River in Panpatti union of Galachipa upazila. Although a pontoon spade and jetty were constructed at the jetty, the jetty was washed away due to river erosion. There is currently a pontoon at the wharf and there are plans to build a new jetty. Every day, two single-storey launches ply the Galachipa-Rangabali route through the jetty.

The Hazirhat launch dock was launched in 2004. The ghat is located on the banks of the river Buragauranga in the headquarters of Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali district. There is a pontoon for passengers to board the public launch. Two double-decker and two single-decker launches ply through the wharf every day.

The Banyatali launch dock was launched in 2009. The jetty is located on the banks of the river Buragauranga in Ratnadi Taltoli union of Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district. There is a pontoon and a jetty at the wharf for passengers to board the launch. Double-decker one and three single storey launches ply through the wharf every day.

The Auliapur launch dock was launched in 2019. The ghat is located on the banks of Buragauranga River in Rangopaldi union of Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali district. There is a pontoon at the wharf for passengers to get on and off the public launch. Double-decker one and two single storey launches ply through the wharf every day.
