Four workers killed in lightning strikes

Four people, including two brothers, were killed and three others injured in lightning strikes at two places in Sunamganj and Moulvibazar districts on Wednesday, reports BSS.

The deceased were Fakhrul Miah, 47, son of late Abdul Manaf of Mathurapur village at Bhatipara union under Derai upazila in Sunamganj, his younger brother Fazlu Miah, 45, and Raman Bhumij, 27, son of Nanda Bhumij of Fultala Tea Garden at Juri upazila in Moulvibazar, and Lalita Bhumij, 13, daughter of Shyamal Bhumij of the same tea garden, police said.

Locals said that Fakhrul and Fazlu along with other farmers were harvesting boro crops at Thalerband Haor near their village in the early morning when a thunderbolt struck them.

Fakhrul and Fazlu died on the spot immediately after the incident and three others were injured.

Officer-in-Charge of Derai Police Station Azizur Rahman said the victims’ bodies were handed over to their relatives and the injured were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Officer-in-charge of Juri police station Sanjoy Chakrabartee said two tea workers were killed by lightning strike when they were going to work at Juri Fultola tea estate.
