A former Union Parishad member accused in robbery cases was killed in a ‘shootout’ with police at Islampur of Jamalpur district.

The gunfight took place on the bank of Jamuna River at Kuthiar Char area early on Tuesday, said OC of Islampur Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ali, 40, son of Najar Pramanik of Prajapati Char at the upazila. He was accused in many criminal cases.

Police said a team of police conducted a drive in Prajapati char and arrested Mohamamd Ali and Nupur Akter Happy, 26, daughter of Tofazzal Hossain of Khulna district from a boat on Monday evening. Later, police along with Ali conducted a drive at Kutilarchar for recovering arms around 3:00 am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the associates of Ali opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
