The recent issues of substandard food items being produced and distributed in the country is quite concerning. There have been a number of incidents where BSTI has revoked the license of companies producing substandard food products. However, recent reports published in this daily point to the fact that other than substandard food products the various restaurants and fast-food shops in the country are resorting to the use of tasting salt or monosodium glutamate for enhancing the taste of their food items.

The issue of tasting salt being a harmful substance for the human body is widely known and many people avoid eating food which contain this taste enhancer. But, majority of the restaurants in the capital and most fast-food joints use this item to serve the pleasure of their customers. Moreover, experts opine that not only does tasting salt have a number of adverse side effects but also causes a person to become addicted to a certain type of food through multiple consumptions of any cuisine containing this chemical substance.

Physicians and medical personnel

often speak on the use and effects

of this taste enhancer

There have been demands of imposing ban on this substance in previous times, but surprisingly so, there have been no such step taken towards making this a reality from the government. Physicians and medical personnel often speak on the use and effects of this additive. As a result of which many people try avoiding it. But, the restaurants that are using this substance on a daily basis are feeding the masses this poisonous item repeatedly which might as well can be considered a crime.

The authorities concerned should take note of this issue seriously. Since there is already a drive against substandard food companies going on, the issue whether restaurants are using tasting salt should come into consideration and appropriate steps should be taken against them. Moreover, just as there is law against the use of formalin to preserve food items a similar step should also be taken to rid the plates of this harmful substance too.
