Factories grab, pollute rivers

456 river-grabbers identified in Narayanganj

The administration have identified a total of 4 hundred and 56 land grabbers recently who encroached the riverside land and constructed large-scale industries as well as small shops on them.

Based on separate surveys, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Narayanganj Md. Jasimuddin disclosed the names of river grabbers on December 4, 2019 while Assistant Commissioner (Land) Hasan Bin Mohammad Ali mentioned a list of river grabbers on February 16, 2020.

Four rivers - Shitalakhaya, Buriganga, Dhaleshari, and Balu have gone through Narayanganj district.  Among these four rivers the Shitalakhya is the one that has been grabbed most. Big industries including cement factories, salt industries, knit dyeing factories and dockyard constructed grabbing Shitalakhaya river and it emit wastage poisoning water.

Brick kilns grabbed the river land of Buriganga and it’s a part also grabbed by cement factories named shah cement and crown cement. Recent revealed the list of river grabbers by AC (land) came to light a fatal scenario that branded cement factories and medicine company ACI also the grabber of Shitalakhya river. There are fourteen cement factories in the district of them majority constructed on river bank encroached the river shore even in a portion of river.

A knit garments composite factory named crony grabbed an old river that connected Shitalakhya and Buriganga. The enforcement wing of environment immediately fined the factory for river grab. Deputy Commissioner office disclosed the then named 127 land grabbers while recent Narayanganj sadar AC (land) disclosed list of 229 river grabbers.

When the administration will start a massive eviction against river grabbers the opinion was not collected from the Deputy Commissioner as failed to established cell phone call.
