EC to hold dialogues with all political parties

The Election Commission (EC) is going to hold dialogue with all the 39 registered political parties in phases ahead of the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sansad election, said the EC officials.

According to the EC officials, the dialogue process will begin from July 17 and to be continued till July 31.

In this regard, the EC would invite leaders of Awami League, BNP and all other political parties registered with the EC.

Ashok Kumer Devnath, an Additional Secretary to the EC, on Wednesday said that the EC authorities have decided to hold dialogue with all the registered political parties immediately after the Eid-ul-Azha festival.

“There will be no specific agenda during the dialogue. But the main topic must be the JS polls,” said the EC officials and continued as saying that the dialogue, however, would be open to all aspects centring the JS polls.

EC official sources said that the dialogue would be held in phases and highest four parties would be called in a day or at a time of the dialogue.

It should be mentioned that earlier the EC held another dialogue with the political parties over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Although all the 39 registered political parties had been invited, but 11 of them, including BNP did not respond to the EC’s invitation.

Immediately after the new EC body was appointed, the EC also held discussion with the country’s political leaders, civil society personnel, academicians, journalists and observers.

It should be mentioned that the tenure of the past EC led by KM Nurul Huda ended on February 14. Meanwhile, the government formed a six-member search committee, which had recommended 10 names for the posts of the Chief Election Commissioner and four other EC members.

Later, the President of the state, M Abdul Hamid appointed Kazi Habibul Awal as the CEC and while former district and sessions judge Rashida Sultana, Brig Gen (retd) Md Ahsan Habib Khan, former EC secretary Md Alamgir and former senior secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division Anisur Rahman were appointed as the EC members. The newly appointed EC body led by Kazi Habibul Awal took oath on February 27.
