Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam has announced a scholarship of Taka 1 crore for the students living in the slums of DNCC area.
He said, 'The scholarship will be provided by DNCC every year to continue the education programme of the students living in the slums. I have visited Karail slum and Vasantek slum a few days ago, as mayor of this city, I want to say that no slum will be eviction without rehabilitation. Prime Minister Hasina has given clear instructions in this regard’.
DNCC organized a Policy Dialogue in collaboration with UNDP on 'Challenges and Solutions of Climate Refugees in Dhaka North' at the conference room of Nagar Bhaban of Gulshan in the capital on Wednesday morning.
The DNCC Mayor said this as chief guest at the day-long policy dialogue event.
The mayor said, 'This policy dialogue initiative has been taken to highlight the issues raised by many climate refugees at the international level in today's event. I will highlight the problem of climate refugees coming from different districts in the climate conference’.
The mayor also said, 'Our government is trying to ensure the quality of people’s life affected by climate change, various NGOs have been working with us. But we also have limitations’.
‘I will call on the international community to come forward. Those for whom the life of the people in the coastal areas is endangered due to the increase in the level of salty water, for those whose lives are endangered in North Bengal where the water level has gone down, they must take responsibility.' He categorically said.
He added that it’s the high time to develop Karail Basti, Vasantek Basti, Sattala Basti. There should be fields, parks, schools in slum areas according to the plan.
