A Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police was awarded a  rare certificate of appreciation by the  United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) for working with utmost efficiency, courage and professionalism.

The Bangladesh office of the UN on June 15 awarded the appreciation certificate to Md Shahidullah, who is currently working as the chief of DMP’s Tejgaon Division.

Talking to Bangladesh Post, DC Md Shahidullah confirmed the matter on Thursday.

The appreciation letter was sent by Ramesh Chandra Sen, Security Adviser of the UNDSS.

Bangladesh Post also managed to get a copy of the letter.

In the appreciation, the senior  UN officer said, “I am writing this to thank and compliment you for the very efficient and professional work displayed by your team of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.”

One of our UN staff members, Pratik Ranjan Bishi from International Labour Organization was robbed of his official mobile phone, personal smart watch and a gold ring at the foot over-bridge at road No 27 at Dhanmondi crossing area at around 9:pm on June 4 this year.

As required, the matter was reported to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the letter reads.

To his delight, he has been informed by the police station that they recovered the robbed items.

Drawing also from my own experience of twenty years in my own police service in India, I can say that recovering stolen or robbed property and further returning them to the rightful owner is one of the most difficult and proud pieces of police work, the UN security adviser said appreciating Bangladesh Police.

It takes painstaking effort, dedicated hard work and commitment to make that possible, he continued.

On behalf of UNDSS, I offer my profuse compliments and sincere thanks to your team and to your leadership for the outstanding performance. I am sure this will go a long way in further strengthening the trust between the police and citizens,  the former Indian police officer further said.

The appreciation letter was also sent to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Officer-in-Charge  (OC) of the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

DC Md Shahidullah said, “   We immediately started the investigation getting the information of the incident. Later, we arrested a member of the snatching gang from Laxmipur district and recovered some goods from him.”

We also recovered the knife used in the robbery. We were also able to arrest all three members of the robber group and recovered all the belongings, he said.

Responding to a question, he said, all three arrested robbers  have already given confessional statements before a Dhaka court.

The arrested robbers are now in jail.
