Chittagong Port is going to add new equipment worth Tk 400 crore this year to speed up the development of port. As a result, the port users will able to save time and money.
According to the Port Engineering Department, in the middle of this July, 4 key Gantry cranes with 40 ton capacity from China will arrive at Ctg port. Last year, similar equipment was imported. However, the total number of Gantry Cranes stood at 14.
Besides, 9 Straddle carrier is coming from German, Finland and Poland. The tender has already been completed in order to bring this 40-ton capacity carrier. They will arrive at the port by December next. 8 cranes of 10 ton capacity from Japan are arriving by the end of this year. 2 mobile Harbor cranes and 10 fork lift of 5 ton capacity will be arrived soon.
Besides, there are 29 types of heavy equipment including RGC, RTG for Patenga Container Terminal. Already, for more than 100 different equipment, the Development Project Proposal (DPP) has been sent to the government. Chief Engineer (Mechanical) of Chittagong Port Authority Aminul Islam said, there are more budgets for our equipment purchase. We have sent the DPP to the government. After approval, the purchase process will be started.
Chittagong Chamber President, Mahbubul Alam said the growth of the port increased by 15 percent. To maintain this, there must be a durable and well-equipped equipment to be connected to the port. Our long-standing demand was to increase the number of container handling devices in the port.
According to the port sources, in the past, it was not possible to purchase machinery during the right time because of bureaucratic complications.
But, now the port chairman Rear Admiral Zulfiqar Aziz is taking necessary steps to purchase the equipment to increase Chittagong Port capacity.
