Crescent, Popular fined for fraudulence, charging inflated test fees

A mobile court fined Tk 17 lakh to the authorities of Crescent Hospital, a private hospital, in capital’s Uttara on Monday for preparing fake reports without actually performing blood tests while another mobile court fined Tk 50,000 to Popular Diagnostic Centre, a private diagnostic centre, in Dhanmondi for charging inflated fees in diagnostic tests.

The Crescent Hospital was fined by a mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Popular Diagnostic Centre was fined by a mobile court of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection. Sarwar Alam, the executive magistrate of the RAB, who led the mobile court against Crescent Hospital, said, “There are many allegations against the Crescent Hospital. In recent time, they were found to be involved in the making of fake reports without performing the actual blood tests.”

“On such allegations, we conducted drives Monday afternoon and also found evidences,” the executive magistrate said and added, “Later, the hospital was fined Tk 17 lakh.” Besides, a mobile court of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection authorities conducted a raid at the Popular Diagnostic Centre in Dhanmondi area at noon on Monday and fined Tk 50,000 for charging extra amount of fees than the amount fixed by the government.

The Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday fixed the maximum fees for dengue diagnosis test and other related examinations at the private hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres. The new maximum rate for any dengue diagnosis test, effective from Sunday, is Tk 500 while the maximum charge for the complete blood count test is Tk 400, said DGHS director general Abul Kalam Azad at a press conference at his office in the capital.
