In a bid to save our climate from carbon emissions, the use of renewable energy sources is a must. In our country the electricity spawning from ‘Solar Mini Grid’ is declining every year though the project implementation and tariff cost of solar mini grid have increased.

According to a report by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), the electricity generation cost from renewable energy sources, such as, solar and wind, is declining by 13 percent each year. In the last 10 years, the generation cost of solar power has decreased by 82 percent and wind power by 39 percent.

Government should guide IDCOL’s solar

mini-grids projects to become a

sustainable business model

Therefore, we can say that severe incidences of corruption and irregularities are taking place in the renewable energy sector of our country. When the price of renewable electricity generation sources is decreasing all over the world, in Bangladesh we can see that it is increasing without any genuine reason.

This is limiting the government's efforts to increase renewable energy and it is also an unacceptable fact that the institution of the government entrusted with a great responsibility is involved in such corruptions and irregularities.

Government should now put more emphasis on controlling this serious level of corruption and irregularities. Government should guide IDCOL’s solar mini-grids projects to become a sustainable business model. Making a business model sustainable with renewable energy resources is a norm.

This will ensure productive access to electricity for the population living in off-grid areas and will also facilitate local industries by creating job vacancies and supporting local businesses. Thus, the demand for solar mini grid projects will rise instead of declining.
