Three months into the coronavirus pandemic, acute fear and stigma are still prevailing in Bangladesh over the outbreak of novel coronavirus. In fear of being discriminated and subsequently being victimised in society, many people tested positive for COVID19, tend to conceal information about their infection.

Many people are hiding their symptoms or health history in fear of being stigmatised. No doubt such trend of concealing information are contributing to community transmission of the deadly virus and frustrating the government's efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus.

It is so painful to see the level of stigma that we are witnessing. This is indeed a risky and selfish exercise and in this critical situation, we must overcome fears of being stigmatised for the greater good of fellow human beings.

The COVID-19 pandemic will be over sooner if fears

and rumors are replaced by facts, proper action

and a show of support for one another.

It is understandable that there is confusion, anxiety, and fear among the public. Unfortunately, these factors are fuelling harmful stereotypes. When the outbreak is caused by a new virus, rumours and misinformation run rampant, and stereotypes quickly arise about people who have or may have the disease.

Considering the situation, government, citizens, the media, key influencers and communities have an important role to play in preventing and stopping stigma over coronavirus.

We all need to be intentional and thoughtful when communicating on the social media and other communication platforms, showing supportive behaviors around the new coronavirus disease.

We must stop stigmatising coronavirus patients and approach them with empathy. Remember, everyone is in this together. The COVID-19 pandemic will be over sooner if fears and rumors are replaced by facts, proper action and a show of support for one another.
