A college girl attempted to commit suicide by setting herself on fire at her home at Chougacha area in Jashore on Tuesday night.
The victim was identified as Jasmine Khatun, 17, student of Pashapole Amjamtala Model College at the upazila.
According to the family, six months ago Jasmine married Abul Kashem, father of three, of the same village, defying her family. Two months ago, she returned home leaving her husband. However, a few days ago, the girl wanted to go back to Kashem again. But her father obstructed her. At the time, Jasmine tried to commit suicide by pouring petrol on herself.
Family members rescued her and rushed her to Jashore General Hospital. She was referred to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn And Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. Dhuliani Union Parishad member Mithu Hossain confirmed the matter.
