In a case filed under the Special Powers Act, the caretaker of a house was arrested when he appeared in court instead of the owner. He was later handed over to the police station.
This incident occurred on Monday at Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal-15.
According to court sources, the accused in the case is Amjad Hossain Molla, son of Haji Sujarat Ali Molla from Kathaltala, Duaripara village in Rupnagar Thana of the capital.
The person who was arrested is Md Kamal, the caretaker of another house belonging to Amjad Hossain Molla in Rupnagar. Yesterday (Monday) was the scheduled hearing date for the case. Amjad Hossain Molla’s lawyer and other accused submitted their appearances. During the hearing, when the judge called the names of the accused, Kamal raised his hand instead of Amjad Hossain Molla. Judge Tehsin Iftekhar became suspicious and, upon questioning, Kamal admitted that he had come to appear on behalf of Amjad Hossain Molla. He was subsequently arrested and handed over to Kotwali police station.
Amjad Hossain Molla’s lawyer, Md. Sarwar Hossain, confirmed the incident but told the Bangladesh Post that he was unaware that someone else was appearing on behalf of Amjad Hossain. Lawyer Sarwar stated that Amjad Hossain Molla had come to his chamber in the morning and signed the appearance documents along with the other accused.
However, when the case was presented for hearing, Amjad Hossain was not there. Instead, someone named Kamal raised his hand, and the judge arrested him.
According to the case details, in this case filed under the Special Powers Act at Rupnagar Thana, the caretaker, Md. Kamal, appeared on behalf of Amjad Hossain. On February 4, 2018, four days before the verdict announcement in Khaleda Zia’s corruption case, 20-25 leaders and activists of the BNP-Jamaat alliance suddenly caused a bomb explosion at the main gate of Nurani Housing in extended Pallabi, Rupnagar Thana, creating a reign of terror in the area.
In this incident, SI Shahidullah filed a case at Rupnagar Thana, naming 17 individuals. After the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against Amjad and other defendants, and the case was transferred to the Special Tribunal for trial.
