BWDB to plant 2,500 saplings in Gaibandha in Mujib Year

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has taken up a plan to plant 2500 saplings of various species of trees alongside the canal and flood control embankment of Gaibandha district this year to mark the Mujib Barsha, reports BSS. 

The basic objective of the plantation is to protect ecological balance and to enhance the beauty of the nature side by side making the Mujib year memorable to the people, said a board official .

The tree plantation programme has been progressing fast in the district since last month. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin formally inaugurated the plantation programme of the board at the bank of Shardagari canal at Shoultari area under Badiakhali union of sadar upazila in the district by planting a sapling on August 27 as chief guest.

Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources Ehtesham Reza, sadar UNO Prashun Kumar Chakraborti, the officials of BWDB and local UP chairman were present on the occasion.

Executive engineer of the BWDB Mokhlesur Rahman told BSS that a total of ten lakh saplings of wood, fruit bearing and medicinal trees would be planted across the country this year marking the Mujib Barsha. As Part of the celebration of Mujib Barsha nearly 2500 saplings of various trees would be planted alongside the canals and the embankments of the district this year. Of them, 500 saplings had already been planted so far in the district, he said.
