Businessman stabbed to death while preventing looting of sand at Haluaghat

A sand trader named Abdul Qadir (65) has been hacked to death at Haluaghat in Mymensingh. It is alleged that the old man was stabbed to death for preventing the looting of sand. Three others injured in the incident have been admitted to Phulpur Upazila Health Complex.

Jihad Siddiqui Irad, chairman of the Swadeshi Union Parishad, and his men carried out the attack on Wednesday (September 30th) afternoon, according to relatives of the deceased.

Haluaghat police said local Mamun Mia and his men had rented about 7 acres of land in Gazipur village of the upazila to keep sand from that was being dug out from Kangsha River. On Wednesday morning, Jihad Siddiqui, chairman of the Swadeshi Union Parishad, brought people to forcibly loot the sand with a veku and a truck. Chairman Jihad Siddiqui Irad and his men beat and stabbed the land owner Abdul Qadir, Sharaf Uddin, son Dolan and Farid. Abdul Qadir died on the way to the Phulpur Upazila Health Complex.

Injured Sharaf Uddin told the media that Chairman Irad himself hit him on the head and stabbed Qadir to death.

Meanwhile, police arrested UP chairman Irad and two of his associates from the border Sadhur Bazar area while trying to flee to India. Locals have demanded the execution of the UP chairman and his men involved in the murder.

The accused UP chairman Irad told reporters that he had no involvement in it. He knows nothing about it.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Haluaghat Police Station Mahmudul Hasan said the sand trader was killed by the opposition over an argument over the sand extracted after excavation of Kangsha River. We have learned that the local chairman was involved in the murder. Chairman Irad and two of his associates were detained in the Sadhur Bazaar area on the border while trying to flee to India. Legal proceedings are underway in this regard.
