‘Buriganga River Carnival’ with decorated boats today

The ‘Buriganga River Carnival’ is going to be held today aiming to draw the attention of policy makers, government authorities, local elected bodies and common people to save the ‘Buriganga’ river.

Organisers of the programme said that they are organising river carnival also to raise awareness over pollution at the river and to protest river pollution across the country.

Waterkeepers Bangladesh Consortium and Buriganga River Morcha are jointly organising the ‘Buriganga River Carnival’ in the Buriganga river near Muslimbagh Tower Playground at Thota Gudaraghat area of Kamrangirchar in Dhaka. The programme will begin at 10:00 am.

The ‘Buriganga River Carnival’ will be held with over 100 decorated boats. “The colourful event will take place with a fleet of over 100 decorated boats. The cruising will begin from Thota Gudaraghat and will end at the same place after circling up Kholamora Ghat across the Buriganga river,” said Sharif Jamil, Lead at Waterkeepers Bangladesh Consortium.

Advocate Qamrul Islam, MP from Dhaka-2 constituency; is scheduled to attend the inaugural session of the event as the guest of honour, with Advocate Sultana Kamal, adviser to former caretaker government and president of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA); in the chair.

Some ward councilors of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), river conservationists, government officials and journalists will also be present on the occasion, said Sharif Jamil, who is also general secretary of BAPA.

It can be mentioned that Waterkeepers Bangladesh is a regional entity of Waterkeeper Alliance. The Waterkeepers Bangladesh formed a consortium with the Department of Geography and Environment of Jahangirnagar University; Department of Environmental Science of Stamford University Bangladesh and Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS). The consortium was formed aiming to implement a robust anti-pollution advocacy project titled ‘Promoting democratic governance and collective advocacy for environmental protection in Dhaka city’ in collaboration with USAID and Counterpart International (CPI).
