Banned militant organisation Ansar Al Islam has sent a letter to Bangla Academy Director General Md Nurul Huda threatening to bomb the Amar Ekushey Book Fair. It has written to the Director General of Bangla Academy saying that anti-social activities are going on in two hotels of the capital. If those activities are not stopped, they said they will bomb Amar Ekushey Book Fair, according to media reports.

The law enforcement and intelligence agencies earlier had claimed that there was no specific threat of militant attack centering the book fair. During the last BNP-Jamaat government, the rise of different extremist groups like JMB across the country with direct backing from the then top brass, unleashed a reign of terror in the country from 2001 to 2006. During that period (between 2001 and 2006), the country witnessed an unprecedented surge in terrorism with simultaneous bombing in 63 districts and the gruesome grenade attack in 2004 on a rally attended by the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina.

The government should

not take the

bomb threat lightly

BNP-Jamaat clique has been identified as a “separatist-militant organisation” for their terrorist activities. In the past, they had committed arson terrorism in the name of movement, destroyed people’s lives and property and burnt people.

The government should not take the bomb threat lightly as the extremists aided by anti-liberation forces want to send a message that they are still active ahead of the next national polls. After failing to achieve political gains, they are continuously trying to create unrest in many ways. Besides, in the name of Basher Kella (Bamboo Fort) website, a vested terrorists group has also been provoking subversive acts through social media across the country.

The members of law enforcement agencies must trace the masterminds who are engaged in issuing such bomb threat. We hoped that the location of the escaped militants will be traced in no time.
