Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said BNP’s demand for reelection is illogical, reports BSS.

“BNP’s demand for reelection is unreasonable. When any election approaches, they start blaming the government and the Election Commission,” he told a press briefing after a view-exchange meeting with the leaders of Dhaka South and North City AL and the party’s associate bodies at AL President’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital.

Noting that BNP always wants to make election questionable, Quader said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia got freed on bail on humanitarian ground and this was not the output of the BNP’s movement.

He said BNP could not stage a demonstration in Dhaka city demanding the release of Begum Zia. Considering the age of Khaleda, he said, her imprisonment was suspended for six months. “This was not an output of the BNP movement, but it was an example of Sheikh Hasina’s humanity and generosity,” he added.

About the price hike of essential items, Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister said, a syndicate always works behind the commodity price fluctuations but it is not true that the government is losing to the syndicate.

“Look at all our neighbouring countries…the market price and the import-export are not alike amid the Covid-19 situation and there is also a matter of production,” he said.

The AL general secretary said if there is a shortage of onion in the country, the essential commodity is brought from neighbouring India. “There was less onion production in Karnataka and Maharashtra in India. Then there was a crisis. That is why they stopped onion exporting. But, as a result of the efforts of our government, Indian onion have started coming,” he said.

Quader said the AL organisational activities were not stopped during the Covid-19 period, while the party is going to start its activities in full-swing from next month. On November 3 next, he said, a discussion will be held at Bangabandhu Avenue following health guidelines marking the Jail Killing Day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually take part in the discussion, Quader said. AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organising secretaries Ahmad Hossain, SM Kamal Hossain and Mirza Azam, publicity and publication secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur, social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and deputy office secretary Sayeem Khan were, among others, present.
