Bibiyana Power Plant under threat of flood

The flash flood hit Bibiyana Power Plant as floodwater entered the power plat due to rise of water level in Kushiyara river at Nawabagnj in Habiganj.

Sources of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB) said that the water of Kushiyara river started to increase on Saturday afternoon, and was flowing above the danger level in Nabiganj.

The river water is very near beneath the river protection embankment, posing threat to Bibiyana Power Plant. The local WDB office fears that the power plant might be affected adversely if the water level continues to rise.

However, the WDB officials said they were trying to protect the dam placing sand bags.

As Bibiyana power plant became inundated, some engines of the plant went under water. Its officials said that, there is no possibility of power interruption. If it happens, more areas of the country including Dhaka will experience power shortage.

"Flood water is entering into the Power Plant gradually. Some parts of the Power Plant being inundated. However, there is no possibility to enter water into the main power production centre,” said, Sajal, engineer of the power plant adding that the main production centre of the plant is safe as it is situted at the plain land adjacent to the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.”

Md Taohidul Islam, Executive engineer of Habiganj WDB, said that the water of Kushiyara river is flowing above the danger level that marks 47 cm. to protect erosion, geosqack are being to dump.
