It is heartening to note that the government has planned to increase allocation for women empowerment in the coming budget for fiscal year 2021-22 (FY22) as part of its commitment to ensuring equal and active participation of women in the mainstream socio-economic activities.

Over the years, Bangladesh has become a role model in women’s empowerment. The incumbent government had increased allocation for women development in all national budgets from fiscal year 2009-10 to 2018-19 and on an average the allocation witnessed a rise by 22 percent during the period.  Reportedly, about 70 percent of the beneficiaries of various projects of the rural development and co-operatives department are women.

Women’s contribution to

Bangladesh’s progress in

different areas is noteworthy

Women in Bangladesh are leading from the front in the country’s sustainable development. Whether it is handicraft, business, medicine, engineering, media, sports, technology or rocket science, women have set their foothold in every field of work or profession.

However, still a section of people in our society has a perception that women are less empowered than men. It needs no emphasising that in many spheres of life we encounter gender discrimination. Hitherto domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, wage discrimination, and social discrimination against women are common phenomena in Bangladesh. Therefore, being vocal about gender discrimination and violence against women has become a part of our social responsibility.

Women’s contribution to Bangladesh’s progress in different areas is indispensable. In order to sustain the tempo of current progress of Bangladesh, women’s participation is inevitable. In order to make this nation strong and self-reliant, dynamic projects are needed to be incorporated to empower women. In this regard, we must remove all kinds of barriers and discrimination that prevent women from realizing their full potential.
