Bangladesh has made impressive progress in the last 14 years in many economic indicators which reflect the political policies of Bangabandhu.

After Independence, Bangabandhu adopted three very important policies which were a very timely and appropriate decision.

The policies were raising food production, controlling the population and emphasizing the right to public education.

Dr Atiur Rahman, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, made the statements while speaking at a seminar titled “Language Movement to Liberation War: The Progress of Middle class in East Bengal” organized by  Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) at its auditorium in the capital on Wednesday.

Dr Binayak Sen, director general of the BIDS presided over the programme.

Atiur said the aspirations that inspired Bengalis from the language movement to the war of liberation in the independent country were reflected in the political policies of Bangabandhu.

He mentioned Bangabandhu wanted to build a hopeful generation with an independent country and took many initiatives to build a good nation including constitution of independent country based on nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism, roadmap for self-reliance and inclusive development in first five year plan, Kudrat-e-Khuda education commission to build hopeful generation with independent country, prioritize restructuring and development of agriculture as the powerhouse of the economy and  the gradual development of individual entrepreneurs in the industrial sector starting with state patronage.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started dreaming of building a ‘Sonar Bangla’ when he was only a young politician (student), he informed.

Before intervention by the British, a businessman of Murshidabad could have bought a huge city if he wanted to, which means Bengal had so many rich resources, he said, adding that Bengal was one of the richest regions of the world at that time, he added.

“This is why Bangabandhu was thinking of this dream. Bangabandhu realized that thousands of people then in Bengal starved to death despite this region being one of the most prosperous places having rich resources. He then reckoned that it was the colonial rule that neglected the people of Bengal. Bangabandhu was very fond of Sonar Bangla,” he mentioned.

Quoting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Rahman said, “Bengali nationalism was established through the great language movement. We have made Bangladesh a role model for development in the world for the last 14 years by embracing this Bengali nationalism and the ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

Based on the capital of deep connection and understanding with the people, Bangabandhu was able to inspire the people of this country in the golden journey of the independent country from the language movement to the liberation war, he mentioned.

However, Bangladesh has moved fast and accelerated economic development in the last 14 years as the country witnessed a rapid growth of many economic indicators including exports and remittances, he said adding that this growth will be continued as many mega projects including the Padma Bridge that connects 21 districts with the capital to ensure sustainable economic development.
