As reported by this daily on Thursday, the state-owned Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) would work on shifting their overhead electric cables underground in Dhanmondi areas of the capital from next month.

According to DPDC, a total of 190 km of overhead electric line will be taken underground in next two years in Dhanmondi including Mirpur Road, Satmasjid Road, City College and its adjacent areas under a pilot project. No cable will remain visible there.

If the project is implemented people will get modern facilities with reliable, safe and quality power supply. It will play a vital role in improving the power distribution system and substantially check the unexpected interruption in power supply.

Authorities concerned should frame a

comprehensive plan to complete the

project within the stipulated time

Moreover, the aesthetics of the city will be improved l, accidents will be minimized and greenery of the city will be protected. Hence, not only in some areas, government and authorities concerned should focus on taking all electricity cables underground throughout the city.

For decades, we have allowed this spread of cable tangles in the city, and the scenario, therefore, cannot be changed overnight. The government and other regulatory bodies should carry out a comprehensive plan to take all electricity cables underground throughout the city. Also, before implementing the decision to take the cables and wires underground, other related issues should be taken into consideration.
