AL infighting leaves one dead, 5 hurt in Kushtia

An Awami League (AL) activist was killed and five others were hurt in a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing dominance at Matpur village under Ujangram union of Sadar upazila in Kushtia on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Azim Mandal, 60, an AL activist. The injured people were admitted in Kushtia General Hospital.

According to police, the incident took place on Thursday at 10.00am when the supporters of AL Zilla Parishad member Abdul Majid and supporters of AL general secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique locked into an altercation in the morning, triggering a clash that left one dead and five others injured.

However, Abdul Majid was  hacked to death near a local graveyard by the supporters of Abu Bakkar Siddique.

Officer-in-Charge of Islami University Police Station, Jahangir Arif said Abdul Majid, a member of district unit Awami League and Abu Bakar Siddique, general secretary of Ujangram union Awami League, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy.

 On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further anxiety.
