Chattogram City Corporation Mayor MdRezaul Karim Chowdhury lauded the involvement of JICA, a national and Chittagong development partner and supporter, saying their state-of-the-art management is an exemplary good initiative to remove waste and turn waste into energy.  This will open up new possibilities for the present and future to be pollution free and environment friendly.

He was speaking at the handing over of 35 prototype rickshaw vans to two ward conservancy offices to CCC by JICA Waste Management Project at Nagar Bhaban on Thursday morning.

He said that JICA is involved in many development activities of CCC.  In particular, the company has continued its consistent activities in the development of several roads in the city.  In addition, the organization is working to improve the living standards of marginalized people.  This work will help Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to alleviate poverty by 2030.

He said that the door of new possibilities has been opened by setting up two state-of-the-art and technologically advanced conservancy centers at Alkaran Ward No. 31 Railway Station and South Halishahar Ward No. 39 Box Ali Road in place of Chittagong City Corporation.  CCC will continue this process through all possible efforts.  The mayor said Chittagong is a port city surrounded by hills, rivers and seas.  If the present government completes the construction of tunnel and bay terminal under Karnafuli around this city, it will be transformed into 'One City two Town' and Chittagong will become the economic hub of the world.  However, at present the problem of waterlogging is acute in the city and the government is implementing mega projects to solve this problem.  If the project is implemented, the city dwellers will get rid of the problem.

The mayor presented the JICA delegation with a letter of demand from the CCC.  This requires building sustainable urban society through waste management following the application process as per CCC master plan 2021-2050.  According to the master plan, the issue of general waste as well as medical waste management should be given special importance in the city.  With the emphasis on expanding these ward-based activities in every city, steps need to be taken to ensure that land-based waste is not detrimental to the environment.

ICT should be given importance in the development of waste management.  Metrorail will provide necessary assistance for the development of transit management - JICA will have a role in this.  Compactor trucks are available in 13 out of 41 wards as per JICA Grant Aid-2018.  This will require 100 more prototype rickshaw units and the establishment of Sustainable Waste Management Offices (SWM) in 10 more wards.

The head of the JICA delegation said that Bangladesh is now a role model of development in the world.  Japan is also a helpful companion in this journey.  We will be glad if JICA has taken the initiative and invested in the implementation of the project to keep the existing trend of development more dynamic in the welfare of the people.

He said that in today's world, environmental safety and air pollution have been taken into consideration in the disposal of waste.  In the modern world, waste management activities are conducted in three ways: 3R or Recycle, Reuse and Reuse.  He assured that he would take appropriate action as per the demand of the mayor.

CCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad ShahidulAlam, Secretary Khaled Mahmud, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam Manik, Mayor's Private Secretary Muhammad Abul Hashem, Supervising Engineer Kamrul Islam, Additional Chief Accounting Officer HumayunKabir Chowdhury, Executive Engineer Mirza FazlulQuader, JICA Senior Representative Saheki Takeshi, Representative Daiki Matsumoto, SWM Project Team Leader Mashiro Saito, JICA Senior Program Officer Md Abdullah Hossain, SWM National Team Leader MdRoknuzam were present on the occasion.
