The country’s lone coal-fired power plant at Barapukuria in Dinajpur is going to add 125 MW electricity to national grid by next week.

The additional power will be produced as the repair works of unit number 1 of the power plant completed on Thursday, said officials.

Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant sources said the additional 125 megawatt (MW) power will be added to the national grid from the new unit.

Sources said the amount spent in repair work at unit 1 was about Tk 200 crores. Chinese company's CMC and XMC Consolidated Company were working under contract to repair the unit since 2017. The reconstruction work was supposed to be completed in 420 days according to the agreement, but the company could not finish the project in time.

Barapukuria Thermal Power Station Engineer-in-charge Md Mahbubur Rahman told journalists that the Chinese company could not finish the reconstruction by fixed time.

He said that the contractor recently completed the repair work of the first unit. The additional 125 MW will be added to the national grid by next week.

“The electricity generated from the unit will overcome the energy deficit in the northern region of the country and reduce the amount of load shedding as well,” he added.

Mentionable, the plant with its three units has a cumulative installed capacity of producing 525 megawatt (MW) power. The first two units (2 x 125 MW) started its commercial operation in 2015 while the third unit (1 x 275 MW) started its operations later.
