97 Yaba peddlers indicted

A Cox’s Bazar court on Thursday framed charges against 97 Yaba peddlers out of 102 who surrendered a year ago. Among the 102 accused, three could not appear before court for illness, another was also absent and another died earlier.

Public Prosecutor (PP) of Cox’s Bazar Faridul Alam confirmed the matter. He informed that charges were formed against the Yaba peddlers by the court of Cox’s Bazaar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismael on Thursday noon. It is learnt on February16 last year, 102 listed Yaba peddlers surrendered to police in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on the playground of Teknaf Pilot High School. Later, police filed two cases against them on charge of drug peddling and possessing fire arms.

Faridul Alam informed, 97 of 102 surrendered Yaba peddlers were produced before the court then the court framed charge against them. One Yaba peddler Russel died during trial and three others failed to attend the court due to illness. Former PP Shamim Ara Swapna, Advocate Jahangir Alam and Advocate Mohiuddin appeared for the accused at the court.
