At least 43 containers fell into the Bay of Bengal from a cargo vessel on Sunday morning near Hatiya while those were being carried from Chattogram port to Pangaon Inland Container Terminal in Keraniganj, Dhaka, reports BSS. Mohammad Selim, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), told journalists that as many as 43 containers out of 83 fell off cargo vessel ‘KSL Gladiator’ into waters amid rough weather near Lal Boya of Bhasan Char area in Noakhali around 9 am Sunday on its way to Pangaon. Port sources said the cargo started shaking severely due to rough weather and at one stage the containers fell into water.

However, vessel movement through Hatiya channel is not being hampered due to the accident, port source said. Selim further said Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and the Port Authorities have launched search efforts for retrieving the containers.
