Three construction workers died after inhaling toxic gas inside a septic tank of an under-construction building in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur on Wednesday.

Police sources said the incident took place in Taltola Mohalla of village Naokhoir under Isabpur union of the upazila at 8:30 am.

"The deceased are Mahmud Hossain, 35, of the same village, Saidul Islam, 38, of Moulavipara village and Altaf Hossain, 45, of Chowdhury Para village in the upazila," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chirirbandar police station Md. Bazlur Rashid told BSS at 3:40 pm.

Quoting locals, the OC said that construction of the septic tank of the under-construction building was completed a few days ago.

"Construction workers Mahmud and Saidul first went down into the septic tank to unpack shuttering materials. Not getting any response from them for a long time, worker Altaf also went down. None of them returned anymore," he said.

Knowing the incident, the locals rushed there and found them in an unconscious state at the bottom of the septic tank and rescued the ill-fated workers adopting precautionary measures.

When they were taken to Chirirbandar Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty declared Mahmud and Saidul dead.

Besides, the doctor referred seriously ill Altaf to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment at 11 am.

"We are suspecting that the workers died after inhaling poisonous gas Carbon Dioxide inside the septic tank," the OC said, adding that an unnatural death (UD) case was filed in this connection with the police station.
