12 BNP-Jamaat leaders detained on charge of sabotage in Bauphal

Police detained 12 leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami Bangaldesh were arrested in accusations of vandalism, destruction of state assets, sabotage and conspiration to overthrow the government in the name of quota reformation movement in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhli.

They were arrested from various areas of the Upazila in the last 5 days.

The detainees are joint convener of upazila BNP Samul Islam Lenin, Amir Sher Ali Akon of Adabaria union Jamaat-e-Islami, general secretary of Surjamoni union BNP Mahbub Alam Talukdar, Jubadal leaders Hazi Rubel, Mosralin, Kamal Hossain, Babu and Samsul Alam. They were sent to jail through the court after being detained.

Officer-in-Charge of Bauphal Police Station Shonit Kumar Gayen confirmed the matter. He said BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders conducted vandalism, attack, destruction of state assets and killing of law enforcement members in the name of student movement. The nation has seen the destruction they have caused. According to intelligence information, the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders planned sabotage in Bauphal as well. They were detained due to that. 

According to the source, a circle of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami became active to use the general students of Bauphal after the anti-quota protest started.

 They planned to use the tender students as shield to cause violence in various important areas of the upazila and the municipality. According to the plan, they brought out a demonstration led by a leader of Chatradal in the municipality. More than hundred students participated in the demonstration. There is also complaint that several leaders worked behind to instigate the students in that demonstration. 

Another Source said, when the movement took a violent turn in Dhaka, a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami became active to bring the Chatradol, Chatrashibir and Jubadol leaders in Dhaka. They also held secret meeting in the top leader’s house to make plan and take part in the movement in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, four people of Bauphal upazila were killed in anti-quota movement in Dhaka. They are Nabin Talukdar of Shantibagh area, Hasan Mehedi of Dhulia union, Jahangir Hossain of Madanpura union and Al-Amin of Keshabpur union.

Officer-in-Charge Shonit Kumar Gayen said the deceased were buried by their families. He also said that everyday life in Bauphal upazila is normal now. They are conduction drives to bring those under the law who planned to sabotage in the name of anti-quota movement.
