100 birds die in Poba

Hundreds of birds are dying by being trapped in the current-nets set by farmers on trees to save their fruits from the menace of birds in various villages of Rajshahi.

Members of Youth Action for Social Change (YASC) have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Divisional Commissioner in Rajshahi on Monday noon where they pleaded to save the birds and punish those who are killing the birds by setting current-nets on their trees. They also called upon the Prime Minister to take effective measure to ensure that the ban of selling and using the current net is being strictly followed.

It is learnt, on February 12, current nets were set up on the Jujube (kul) trees of one Barkat Ali of village Chhoto Paikpara under Paba Upazila to save the fruits of the trees from the menace of birds. By being trapped in the nets, more than 100 birds were killed. Being informed, Shahadat Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Paba through forming a mobile court seized the current nets and destroyed those.

The memorandum, signed by Shamiul Alam Shaon and Nazmul Islam Akash, President and the General Secretary of YASC respectively, was handed over to Humayun Kabir Khandker, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi where they demanded punishment for the person responsible for killing more than 100 birds through trapping those in current nets. They also demanded to stop production and selling of current nets. The YASC members also submitted the same memorandum to the Hamidul Haque, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi.
